Tea/Lunch Talks
Wednesday, December 7, 2016 | Racism from AAPI Parents/Family | Tea Talk
AASA's fourth tea talk will be centered around racism from AAPI parents and family members (thank you to everyone who participated in the topic poll last week!). It'll take place on Wednesday, Nov. 9 in the BCSC Formal Lounge from 5-6 PM.
So it's Thanksgiving and you're sitting at the table–everything is fine, until your dad or distant uncle or disgruntled grandmother casually makes a racist comment. What do you do?
Many older gen AAPI folks grow up in vastly different cultural and socioeconomic contexts than the ones we inhabit now, and thus have vastly different perspectives and opinions. As we shape our own identities, these differences become more apparent and problematic.
Thanksgiving is approaching, and those of you returning home might be forced to confront this brand of racism within your own family. There are many different facets to this situation, which can be tied to anti-blackness, colorism, sexism and dating, and filial piety.
Wednesday, November 9, 2016 | Community Gathering | Tea Talk
Originally set to be the date of the "Racism from AAPI Parents/Family" Tea Talk, this tea talk was pushed back to December 7 and instead the space and the boba was utilized for a community gathering to discuss the effect of the recent election on the AAPI community and beyond.
Friday, October 14, 2016 | AAPI in the Media | Tea Talk
AASA will be having our second open discussion this Friday, October 14, 4pm in the BCSC Formal Lounge. In light of several recent news items, including Disney's upcoming Mulan movie, Fox News' Chinatown segment, and NBC's canceled Mail Order Bride series, this week's theme will be AAPI in the Media. Stop by to share your experiences, meet others in the community, or just for the free tea we'll be serving :).
Friday, September 30, 2016 | How Do You Define Your AAPI Identity? | Lunch Talk
This week's theme is How do you define your AAPI identity? Eva Longoria once said about her identity:
"I've kind of lived my life straddling the hyphen of being Mexican-American. I kind of just sit on that hyphen, you know – navigating loving enchiladas and apple pie, loving mariachi music and Britney Spears. But there are so many moments in my life that were memorable to that experience of being a hybrid, of being a hyphen."
Some of us may define our identities as 'straddling the hyphen,' while others may wish people didn't see us for our color, and wish to be seen as just as American as the next person. Are the concepts mutually exclusive? How do you define your AAPI identity?
