AASA Tea Talk: Racism with Asian Parents
When: December 7, 2016, 5:30pm
Where: BCSC Formal Lounge
AASA's fourth tea talk will be centered around racism from AAPI parents and family members (thank you to everyone who participated in the topic poll last week!). It'll take place on Wednesday, Nov. 9 in the BCSC Formal Lounge from 5-6 PM.
So it's Thanksgiving and you're sitting at the table––everything is fine, until your dad or distant uncle or disgruntled grandmother casually makes a racist comment. What do you do?
Many older gen AAPI folks grow up in vastly different cultural and socioeconomic contexts than the ones we inhabit now, and thus have vastly different perspectives and opinions. As we shape our own identities, these differences become more apparent and problematic.
Thanksgiving is approaching, and those of you returning home might be forced to confront this brand of racism within your own family. There are many different facets to this situation, which can be tied to anti-blackness, colorism, sexism and dating, and filial piety.
Come to our event to discuss some of your personal experiences with this issue, and engage in conversation about how we might respond productively. Also, there will be free bubble tea again, so do I need to ask twice? :')

AASA Tea Talk: Education and Equality
When: December 2, 2016, 5:30pm
Where: Sayles 202
Hello AASA! Come join us this Friday for a discussion on working in education as an Asian/American. Asians are severely underrepresented in the educator force, which invokes several unique dynamics (challenges and privileges). This Tea Talk will have a slightly different format than usual, as Takeru Nagayoshi '14, who has worked as an English teacher with Teach for America the past two years, will be joining us to share his experiences.
Takeru and another AAPI teacher reflected upon their experiences earlier this year in a (rather engaging!) Story Corp audio. The audio times are broken down so you can jump to topics that interest you: https://storycorps.me/interviews/asian-in-urban-education-high-school-teachers-talk-race/
Topics include:
Racism and microaggressions in schools
The importance of racial identity in the classroom
Navigating conversations of race/identity with students/allyship
This talk is NOT just for those of us who are interested in working in education! Themes from Takeru's experience include questions like: How do we navigate discussions about race with youth? How do we deal with the inevitable attention placed on our identity, in any industry, space, or location where Asian Americans are underrepresented (i.e. AAPI in sports, business leaders, politics, etc.)?
The Tea Talk will be on Friday, December 2nd, at 5:30 pm in Sayles 202. Don't forget - Bubble Tea, courtesy of Yan's, will be served!
** Notice: This Tea Talk is NOT sponsored by Teach for America and is in no way a recruiting event. **

Cambodian Son Screening and Q&A Session with Director Masahiro Sugano
When: April 11, 2015 @ 7pm
Where: Smitty-B 106
Deported by America. Adopted by America Embraced by the world.
Cambodian Son documents the life of deported poet, Kosal Khiev after receiving the most important performance invitation of his career—to represent the Kingdom of Cambodia at the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. Kosal would travel to London having only taken two flights prior; first, as a 1-year-old refugee child whose family fled Cambodia and, then as a 32-year-old criminal “alien” forcibly returned to Cambodia in 2011. Armed only with memorized verses, he must face the challenges of being a deportee while navigating his new fame as Phnom Penh’s premiere poet. After the performances end and the London stage becomes a faint memory, Kosal is once again left alone to answer the central question in his life: “How do you survive when you belong nowhere?”

It is important for students to feel a sense of membership as well as be able to identify themselves as being a part of the APIA community.
This year’s BAASIC conference will be tailored around the idea of involvement in the local community and highlighting local activism as we bring in doctors, professors, novelists, poets, dancers, and students in a one day conference celebrating APIA identity, individuality, and activism.
Unity is strength and as a community, we can create change." - BAASIC's website
